Introduction

Lent is the time of preparation for Easter when we focus on penitence, reflection and spiritual growth. Around the tenth century Lent came to be linked with Christ’s forty days in the wilderness. Therefore it is a time when a renewal of commitment and simple worship are appropriate.

1. Preparation

Angie to play preparation music.

My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, you God, will not despise.

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

O Lord, open our lips:
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
O God make speed to save us:
O Lord make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit:
As it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen

Lord, direct our thoughts and teach us to pray.
Lift up our hearts to worship you in spirit and in truth
through Jesus Christ our LordAmen

My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, you God, will not despise.

2. Confession

Angie to play confession music at sung tempo.

Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against him. Let us admit to God the sin which always confronts us:

Father, we are sorry
for the things we’ve thought
The things we’ve said and done
That dishonoured you
And hurt those we love

Father God have mercy
‘Cause of your great love
Please cleanse us from our sin
Forgive us again
We turn our hearts to you

Thank you for your mercy
Thank you for your grace
Thank you for your love
Thank you for the peace you give

Thank you for your mercy
Thank you for your grace
Thank you for your love
Thank you for the peace you give

Our Father in heaven
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come
your will be done
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.

Father, we are sorry
for the things we’ve thought
The things we’ve said and done
That have dishonoured you
And hurt those we love

Father God have mercy
‘Cause of your great love
Please cleanse us from our sin
Forgive us again
We turn our hearts to you

Thank you for your mercy
Thank you for your grace
Thank you for your love
Thank you for the peace you give

Thank you for your mercy
Thank you for your grace
Thank you for your love

3. The Word

The Bible reading is from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter six, verses one to six and sixteen to twenty-one.

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before others in order to be seen by them, for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

“So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“And whenever you fast, do not look somber, like the hypocrites, for they mark their faces to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

This is the gospel of the Lord
Praise to you O Christ

Sermon from Canon Jerry

4. Affirmation of Faith

You were the Word at the beginning
One with God the Lord Most High
Your hidden glory in creation
Now revealed in You our Christ

What a beautiful Name it is
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a beautiful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

You didn’t want heaven without us
So Jesus You brought heaven down
My sin was great Your love was greater
What could separate us now

What a wonderful Name it is
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a wonderful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

(Angie to play the ‘bridge section’ during the spoken words.)

Let us affirm our faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God.

Though he was divine
he did not cling to equality with God
but made himself nothing.
Taking the form of a slave
he was born in human likeness.
He humbled himself
and was obedient to death
even the death of the cross.
Therefore God has raised him on high
and given him the name above every name:
that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bow
and every voice proclaim
that Jesus Christ is Lord
to the glory of God the Father
Amen.

Death could not hold You
The veil tore before You
You silence the boast of sin and grave
The heavens are roaring
The praise of Your glory
For You are raised to life again

You have no rival
You have no equal
Now and forever God You reign
Yours is the kingdom
Yours is the glory
Yours is the Name above all names

What a powerful Name it is
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a powerful Name it is
Nothing can stand against
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
Ending
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, you God, will not despise.

5. Prayers

(Backing track – O Lord hear my prayer)

O Lord hear my prayer
O Lord hear my prayer
When I call, answer me
O Lord hear my prayer
O Lord hear my prayer
Come and listen to me

Holy God we hold Your creation before you:
your peoples and places, nature and nations,
lamenting the damage we are inflicting
on all that you declared ‘good’.
Merciful Father, we plead to You:
Break the chains of injustice and oppression.
and for those ravaged by war, famine, and climate change,
bring them Your peace and every encouragement,
for Jesus, you are our hope for the world.

Help us be Jesus to the world
Help us be your hands and your feet
Lord, help us have your heart for the broken-hearted
Help us be Jesus to a world
that needs you more than words can tell
Help us be Jesus to the world

O Lord hear my prayer
O Lord hear my prayer
When I call, answer me
O Lord hear my prayer
O Lord hear my prayer
Come and listen to me

Holy God we hold our community before you:
those in positions of leadership and power.
May they act with justice and mercy
in accordance with your will and purpose.
And heavenly Father, we lift to you
those that need a touch of your love.
Bring them to complete healing and wholeness,
and grant them your grace, mercy, and peace,
in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.

Help us be Jesus to the world
Help us be your hands and your feet
Lord, help us have your heart for the broken-hearted
Help us be Jesus to a world
that needs you more than words can tell
Help us be Jesus to the world

O Lord hear my prayer
O Lord hear my prayer
When I call, answer me
O Lord hear my prayer
O Lord hear my prayer
Come and listen to me

(During this last verse the sopranos continue to sing Help us be Jesus to the world)

O Lord hear my prayer
O Lord hear my prayer
When I call, answer me
O Lord hear my prayer
O Lord hear my prayer
Come and listen to me

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

6. Communion and Imposition of Ashes

Angie to play Remember Me music at sung tempo.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

The Lord is here
His Spirit is with us
Lift up your hearts
We lift them to the Lord
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
It is right to give him thanks and praise

Let us set apart this bread and wine
that it may become special
and used by God to bless us.

We praise and thank you, loving Father
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
As we obey your command, send your Holy Spirit,
that this bread and wine may be for us
the body and blood of your precious Son.

On the night you were betrayed you took the bread
After giving thanks you broke it and said
This is my body broken for you
And as you eat it remember me
This is my body broken for you
And as you eat it remember me.

On the night you were betrayed you held the cup
After giving thanks you lifted it up
This is my blood, poured out for you
And as you drink it remember me
This is my blood, poured out for you
And as you drink it remember me

So we thank you for the wine and for the bread
For we see the life you gave and the blood you shed
And we remember your wondrous love
You gave your body, you shed your blood
And we remember your wondrous love
You gave your body, you shed your blood

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ
Though we are many we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.

Dear friends, receive the body and blood
of our Lord Jesus Christ with faith and thanksgiving.
Remember that he gave himself for you.
Remember that he died for you
and allow him to feed and nourish your body, mind, and spirit.

My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, you God, will not despise

Please come forward to receive communion and the imposition of ashes.

Helen to play backing music until choir ready to sing.

Be still for the presence of the Lord
The Holy One is here
Come bow before Him now
With reverence and fear
In Him no sin is found
We stand on holy ground
Be still for the presence of the Lord
The Holy One is here

Be still for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around
He burns with holy fire
With splendor He is crowned
How awesome is the sight
Our radiant King of light
Be still for the glory of the Lord
Is shining all around

Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place
He comes to cleanse and heal
To minister His grace
No work too hard for Him
In faith receive from Him
Be still for the power of the Lord
Is moving in this place

Breathe on me breath of God
Fill me with life anew
That as you love, so may I love
And do what you would do

Breathe on me breath of God
Until my heart is pure
Until my will is one with yours
To do and to endure

Breathe on me breath of God
Fulfil my heart’s desire
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with your heavn’ly fire

Breathe on me breath of God
So shall I never die
But live with you the perfect life
Of your eternity

Spirit of the living God
Fall afresh on me
Spirit of the living God
Fall afresh on me
Melt me mould me
Fill me use me
Spirit of the living God
Fall afresh on me

Spirit of the living God
Fall afresh on us
Spirit of the living God
Fall afresh on us
Melt us mould us
Fill us use us
Spirit of the living God
Fall afresh on me

Let us give thanks to God:

Almighty God,
we thank you for feeding us with the
body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ.
Through him we offer you our
souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory.
Amen.

7. Dismissal

Angie to play dismissal music.

God of compassion
through your Son Jesus Christ
you have reconciled your people to yourself.
As we follow his example of prayer and fasting
may we obey you with willing hearts
and serve one another in holy love
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

May Christ give us grace to grow in holiness
to deny ourselves, take up the cross and follow him
and may the blessing of God Almighty
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
be among us and remain with us always.
Amen.

My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, you God, will not despise

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
In the name of Christ, Amen.

Angie to play gently as people leave.
