Daily Prayer
Daily Prayer
The Daily Prayer is from our seasonal Peaceful Worship and may be prayed at any time of the day. You may say it all, or if you are in a group be led and say the parts in bold.
Opening Sentences
1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
John 15:16a
Jesus said, “You did not choose me but I chose you and appointed you so that you may go and bear fruit – fruit that will last.”
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
We have come together
in the name of Christ
to offer our praise and thanksgiving,
to hear and receive God’s holy word,
to pray for the needs of the world,
and to seek the forgiveness of our sins,
that by the power of the Holy Spirit
we may give ourselves to the service of God.
Opening Responses
O Lord, open our lips:
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
O God make speed to save us:
O Lord make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit:
As it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen
Praise the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.
Prayer of Preparation
Lord, speak to us
that we may hear your word.
Move among us
that we may behold your glory.
Receive our prayers
that we may learn to trust you.
Amen.
Confession
Christ the light of the world
has come to dispel the darkness of our hearts.
In his light, let us examine ourselves and confess our sins.
Silence is kept.
Let us return to the Lord our God and say to him:
Lord God,
we have sinned against you;
we have done evil in your sight.
We are sorry and repent.
Have mercy on us according to your love.
Wash away our wrongdoing
and cleanse us from our sin.
Renew a right spirit within us
and restore us to the joy of your salvation;
through Jesus
Christ our Lord.
Amen
Absolution
May Almighty God,
who sent his son into the world to save sinners,
bring us his pardon and peace,
now and for ever.
Amen.
Collect
Let us gather our prayers together:
Almighty God,
who called your Church to witness that you
were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself:
help us to proclaim the good news of your love,
that all who hear it may be drawn to you;
through him who was lifted up on the cross,
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Psalm 100: A Song of Joy
O be joyful in the Lord, all the earth;
serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song.
Know that the Lord is God; it is he that has made us and we are his;
we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and bless his name.
For the Lord is gracious; his steadfast love is everlasting,
and his faithfulness endures from generation to generation.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.
Isaiah 61:1-4, 11: A Song of the Anointing of the Spirit
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me:
because the Lord has anointed me.
He has sent me to bring good news to the poor:
and to bind up the broken-hearted.
To proclaim liberty to the captives:
and the recovery of sight to the blind.
To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour:
a day of recompense from our God.
To comfort all who mourn:
to give them the oil of gladness instead of mourning.
They shall be called oaks of righteousness:
planted by God for his glory.
They shall rebuild the ancient ruins:
and restore what has long laid waste.
For as the earth brings forth shoots and makes new things grow:
the Lord will make integrity and praise spring up before all nations.
Romans 8: A Song of God’s Children
The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death.
All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God;
for we have received the Spirit that enables us to cry, ‘Abba, Father’.
The Spirit himself bears witness that we are children of God and if God’s children, then heirs of God;
If heirs of God, then fellow-heirs with Christ;
since we suffer with him now, that we may be glorified with him.
These sufferings that we now endure are not worth comparing to the glory that shall be revealed.
For the creation waits with eager longing
for the revealing of the children of God.
Gospel Reading: Luke 6:20b-23b, 27b-31
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
“Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven.”
Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who asks of you, and if anyone takes away what is yours, do not ask for it back again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
This is the gospel of the Lord
Praise to you O Christ
Affirmation of Faith
Let us declare our faith in God:
We believe in God the Father,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.
We believe in God the Son,
who lives in our hearts through faith,
and fills us with his love.
We believe in God the Holy Spirit
who strengthens us with power from on high.
We believe in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Prayers
Let us pray for our own needs and for the needs of the world:
Holy God,
Make us transparent with your light
and use our prayers
to bring light to others.
Amen.
Lord, meet us in the quiet.
And hear our prayer.
- For the world (for peace, for all leaders, for those suffering or in need)
- For the church (for our bishops, clergy, the diocese, local churches)
- For our community (for leaders, groups, and those in need or distress)
- For our friends and family (for those we love and those no longer with us)
- For ourselves (we give thanks and we ask for help and guidance)
Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.
God of power,
may the boldness of your Spirit transform us,
may the gentleness of your Spirit lead us,
may the gifts of your Spirit equip us
to serve and worship you
now and always.
Amen.
Jesus taught us to call God our Father, so in faith and trust we pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.
1 Chronicles 29: A Song of David
Blessed are you, God of Israel, for ever and ever,
for yours is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour and the majesty.
Everything in heaven and on earth is yours;
yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head over all.
Riches and honour come from you and you rule over all.
In your hand are power and might;
yours it is to give power and strength to all.
And now we give you thanks, our God,
and praise your glorious name.
For all things come from you,
and of your own have we given you.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.
Prayer of Dedication
Let us dedicate ourselves to the service of God:
Almighty God,
we thank you for the gift of your holy word.
May it be a lantern to our feet,
a light upon our paths,
and a strength to our lives.
Take us and use us to love and serve all people
in the power of the Holy Spirit
and in the name of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Blessing
May the peace of God, which passes all understanding,
keep our hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God,
and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;
and may the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among us and remain with us always.
Amen.
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord:
In the name of Christ. Amen.
